Most entrepreneurs follow this lifecycle:

  1. Nobody cares about your idea or what you're selling

  2. You GRIND to get your first handful of paying clients

  3. You freak the **** out because now you're too busy 😭

  4. You scramble to hire ANYONE who can help you out

  5. That person ends up being a disaster, and your business flat-lines

One of the most critical mistakes you can make with a new business (whether you start it or buy one) is destabilizing its tempo. How do I know? I've done this before.

You see, there's a very specific type of person you need to hire for a fast-growing young business. That person needs to possess the (slightly insane) quality of loving the chaos of entrepreneurship—but they also need to be a systems thinker who can help you scale.

The big problem is that nobody will have the same urgency as the founder. You can try to hand off tasks all day, but what happens if that first hire doesn't move at founder speed? Your operating cadence collapses into a drunken stumble of business mediocrity.

Three truths:

  1. Delegation without urgency is abdication

  2. Speed is cultural—if your first hire moves like the Sloth from Zootopia, your second hire will be even worse

  3. As Charlie Munger says, "Show me the incentive, I'll show you the outcome"

"But Morgaannn, what if I don't have any money to hire someone?"

I hear you—here are three profiles to look for:

  • The Underdog: Find someone who's unqualified on paper but hungry, with a background in scrappy hustle. Think of the young entrepreneur who ran a paper route in school and had the whole block of kids working for them. You can often offer a lower base salary with tons of upside.

  • The Virtual GM: Find an experienced leader in another country (South Africa is popular right now) who can operate remotely at a lower cost than a domestic hire. These candidates are just as qualified—or more—than local hires at half the cost.

  • The Passionate Retiree: This one's the riskiest but can be super interesting. Find a successful entrepreneur or executive who has free time and wants to get back in the game—someone who cares more about the company or project than the money. You need to vet this one hard, though. You do NOT want to hire someone who'll get bored in a few months and kill your momentum.

This leads me to share an exciting new role within one of my companies—where I'm putting this first-hire theory to the test!

idea of the week 💡

  • Problem: Running esports tournaments is chaotic and manual—brackets, player check‑ins, Discord announcements, and live scores get juggled across tools while organizers field nonstop questions.

  • Idea: TourneyFlow automates tournament ops: auto‑generates brackets, sends match notifications, updates scores in real time, and gives organizers a clean dashboard. Integrates with Discord, Twitch, and major game APIs.

  • How it makes money: $99/month for small community tournaments, scaling to $500+ for larger events and premium features. Future add‑ons: analytics, sponsor tools, streaming overlays, prize pool management.

  • Why it might fail: Switching costs and habit change from spreadsheets/Discord workflows, integration complexity with game APIs, and platform dependency on Discord/Twitch. Win by nailing reliability and integrations for early organizer segments.
